Opening an Electricity and Water Account Following the Death of the Account Holder

In the event of the account holder’s passing, the electricity and water account must either be changed to the name of an eligible heir or close the account.

Opening an Account Under an Heir’s Name

Heirs can request to open an account through one of the following customer service channels:

  • EWA Website: Submit your request directly via the Electricity and Water Authority’s official website by selecting the “Open Account” service.
  • National Portal (bahrain.bh): Apply through the Kingdom of Bahrain’s National Portal by using the “Move-in Request” service, available under electricity and water services.
  • Customer Service Centres: Visit one of our service centres located in Zayed City or Seef Mall (Muharraq). Appointments must be booked in advance through the Skiplino appointment Application
  • Virtual Service Centre: Book an appointment via Skiplino to meet virtually with a service representative who will guide you through the process via video call
  • Home Visit Service: For senior citizens and individuals with special needs, EWA offers a home visit option. Call our Contact Centre at 17515555 to schedule a visit, and our team will assist you at your residence.

Required Documents

  • Account Management Agreement (not applicable for online channels)
  • ID card, copy of both sides, or ID card reading data (for citizens and residents)
  • Passport copy (for non-residents)

Heir documentation requirements (one of the following):

  • Copy of a notarised power of attorney on behalf of the heirs attached to an ID copy of the notarised person entrusted by the heirs
  • Copy of the religious ordinance document attached to an authorization letter signed by all the heirs, with copies of the heirs’ ID cards
  • Official IBAN document, or register for direct deduction agreement via credit card

Close the Account

  • To close the account, heirs may submit a request through the Virtual Centre or visit a Customer Service Centre in person. In both cases, an appointment must be booked in advance via Skiplino.
  • Any outstanding balance must be settled prior to submitting the request.

Government Subsidy for the Accounts of the Deceased

The authority grants a period of up to 3 months to recover the value of government subsidy retroactively for subsidized accounts. The account data must be updated within the same period. Government subsidy for electricity & water services is automatically lifted after the death of the account holder based on the latest update from the Information & eGovernment Authority.

With regards to the procedures for issuing a list of heirs for other religions, it is done by filing a court case.
