A highlight of Bahrain’s progressive residency policies is the Golden Residency Visa Program, which allows both current residents and foreign nationals to reside or invest in the Kingdom for extended periods, ensuring stability and security for families and investors alike. And this is in accordance with the standards and regulations stipulated by law.

Visa and Residency Services
Visa and entry permit regulations are managed by the Nationality, Passports, and Residence Affairs (NPRA), under the Ministry of Interior. The NPRA has achieved significant milestones in its digital transformation journey, such as the Digital Residency Program, which has streamlined access to essential services. The introduction of e-visas has also simplified the entry process, increasing efficiency and convenience for expatriates.

NPRA’s commitment to accessibility is reflected in its comprehensive mobile applications available for both iOS and Android users. These apps provide a seamless, user-friendly experience, reinforcing Bahrain’s mobile-first approach to digital public services. The NPRA’s virtual assistance service, available via the NPRA website, features a dedicated Chatbot to address inquiries related to passports, residency, and visas in real time.

Bahrain’s legal framework is robust, prioritizing the fair and respectful treatment of expatriates. Fundamental rights—such as safe working conditions, freedom from discrimination, access to medical care, and paid leave for holidays and parental care—are protected under the Bahrain Labour Law. These regulations ensure that expatriate workers are not exploited or mistreated, and can fully enjoy their time in the Kingdom.

A commitment to religious freedom is enshrined in Article 22 of the Bahrain Constitution, which declares: “Freedom of conscience is absolute.” This provision, coupled with the country’s atmosphere of freedom and openness, has made Bahrain a regional model for peaceful coexistence among various religious and cultural communities.

The Role of the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA)

The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) is a central authority responsible for regulating Bahrain’s labour market. It collaborates with embassies and civil society organizations from labour-exporting countries to ensure worker protection. The LMRA oversees pre-employment medical examinations, in coordination with the Ministry of Health (MOH), promoting health and safety for all foreign workers. Principles of transparency, quality, continuous improvement, and social responsibility guide the LMRA’s activities, reinforcing Bahrain’s reputation as a fair and just workplace, implemented through tools aiming to prevent and protect against exploitation in the workplace, ensuring the full enjoyment of the expatriate workers’ rights.

Ministry of Labour Initiatives

The Ministry of Labour (MOL)  plays an essential role in protecting labour rights, enhancing workplace conditions, and fostering job stability. Responsible for implementing Labour Law No (36) of 2012, the Ministry assists with dispute resolution, worker rights advocacy, and trade union support, all provided without fees. The Ministry also mediates between trade unions and employers and strives to resolve disputes amicably and equitably.

The Kingdom of Bahrain pays special attention to combatting trafficking in persons and has been able to attain many distinguished achievements in this field. Through its efforts, the Kingdom was able to become the first MENA country to secure the United States’ State Department’s tier 1 classification in combating human trafficking. Moreover, it is the only MENA country to achieve this classification 7 subsequent times

The National Human Trafficking Hotline, (995) available 24/7 in multiple languages via the LMRA portal, provides essential support for reporting abuse or exploitation, as well as providing general assistance and guidance as required; and (555) of Anti-Human Trafficking and Protection of Public Morals is also available 24/7 in multiple languages via the Ministry of Interior, which also provides essential support for reporting abuse or exploitation.

A Sheltering Centre at LMRA that works directly with the Public Prosecution is dedicated to receive and assess cases, in addition to recommending appropriate actions, including repatriation or facilitating suitable employment in Bahrain for affected individuals.

Reporting and addressing Labour Complaints

The Labour Inspection Department within the Ministry of Labour investigates complaints from private-sector workers, seeking fair and legal solutions. Workers are encouraged to report concerns, helping to ensure workplace rights and justice are maintained.LMRA also provides support in assisting expatriate workers to submit labour or civil disputes through the Expat Protection Centre, ensuring access to the relevant courts is granted.

Ensuring Fair Payment and Financial Inclusion

Bahrain mandates that employers pay expatriate workers’ salaries via bank accounts, ensuring full salary delivery and reducing wage theft risk. This policy, coordinated by the LMRA, the Central Bank of Bahrain, and private sector partners, introduces International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs) for all expatriates upon arrival at Bahrain International Airport. The initiative also supports electronic banking, financial inclusion, and access to banking services for expatriates, thereby promoting transparency, efficiency, and digital transformation within the financial sector.
