In the Kingdom of Bahrain, fostering an inclusive society is a cornerstone of national development. Here, persons with disabilities are not just protected and supported by law but recognized for their unique contributions. Bahrain's initiatives ensure that these individuals enjoy equality, dignity, and respect as an integral part of the community.

Bahrain adopts a comprehensive approach encompassing education, healthcare, employment, and social inclusion. This commitment is focused on creating opportunities and removing barriers for persons with disabilities, ensuring their full participation in society. By integrating these individuals into all aspects of life, Bahrain demonstrates its dedication to building a truly inclusive community.

Special care for People with disabilities is a constitutional right under Law No. 74 (2006) concerning the Welfare, Rehabilitation, and Employment of Persons with Disabilities. The government of Bahrain has also established the Supreme Committee for the Care of Persons with Disabilities. to oversee the implementation of all initiatives and programs that support these parts of the community and set the National Strategy 2023-2027(PDF, 10.7MB, 142 pages, Arabic only), for people with Disabilities.

The government also set guidelines for ensuring the availability of time for daycare by granting 2 hours off to employees with disability and/or a worker caring for a person with a disability.

The Ministry of Social Development in Bahrain offers a range of services free of charge under the umbrella of Disabled People Services. These services include:

  • Providing supportive monthly disabled allowance remunerations for people with disabilities (BD100 or BD200 depending on the disability type
  • Access to physiotherapy services, providing essential care and support for physical rehabilitation.
  • Vocational rehabilitation, assisting individuals in acquiring skills and training for employment.
  • Academic rehabilitation, ensuring educational opportunities are accessible and tailored to individual needs.
  • Daycare services, including rehabilitative classes designed to enhance daily living skills.
  • Sheltered care offers a supportive environment for those who require it.
  • Intermittent care, providing temporary relief and assistance as needed.
  • Disbursement of prosthetic devices and assistive devices for Disabled.

These services reflect Bahrain's proactive approach to addressing the diverse needs of persons with disabilities, enabling them to lead fulfilling lives. The Ministry has also launched several Community Partnership Projects to support people with disabilities in Bahrain and set a smooth pathway for their involvement in the community, such as obtaining distinctive privileges, driving licenses, academic qualifications, and many more.

In line with the national commitment to guarantee education for all, the Ministry of Education has made strides in providing educational services according to special programs for students with disabilities by specialized teachers for various groups, including the program for integrating students with mild intellectual disabilities and Down Syndrome, which was launched in the 2001/2002 academic year.
