Empowering Bahrain for a Sustainable Future
The Kingdom of Bahrain has made strides in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), since their launch in 2015, thanks to the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The top-down approach by the leadership ensures sustainability is always at the forefront of government plans.
In 2008, Bahrain embarked on an impactful journey with the launch of the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030, showcasing the government's forward-thinking approach. This strategic vision represents a remarkable and ambitious initiative aimed at securing prosperity and security for the nation's citizens and residents. Distinctive in its principles of sustainability, competitiveness, and fairness, the vision sets a significant benchmark for progress. The launch of the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 serves as a testament to the government's unwavering commitment to shaping a prosperous and equitable future for Bahrain.
Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 is more than a policy document; it is a commitment to the people of Bahrain. It encapsulates a vision of transformation, where economic vigor, environmental stewardship, and social equity converge to create a thriving, dynamic Bahrain that is ready to meet the challenges of the future. This strategic plan is not just about economic metrics; it's about building a society where every individual has equal opportunity to achieve their potential, contribute to the nation's prosperity, and enjoy a high quality of life in a secure, vibrant, and equitable Bahrain.
To exemplify its dedication, the government consistently prioritized sustainability by incorporating it into its policies and frameworks. The Government Plan for the period of 2023-2026 (PDF, 2.63MB, 18 pages, Arabic only), titled "From Recovery to Sustainable Growth," highlights its strong alignment with the SDGs in the social, economic, and environmental spheres. Furthermore, the Economic Recovery Plan, introduced in 2021, advocates for a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable recovery following the global COVID-19 pandemic. These initiatives demonstrate the government's unwavering commitment to achieving sustainable and balanced development in Bahrain.
Additionally, in line with the ambitious vision set by its leadership, Bahrain took a significant stride in 2022 by establishing the Ministry of Sustainable Development. This establishment aimed to ensure the seamless integration and effective monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Kingdom of Bahrain's 2023 Voluntary National Review also comes at the mid-point for the implementation of the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda to critically assess and comprehensively present national progress made to date in implementing the agenda.
Furthermore, as the midpoint towards the year 2030 approached, Bahrain actively participated in the SDGs summit held in New York. During this summit, Bahrain presented three national voluntary commitments that aimed accelerating the achievement of the SDGs:
- Strengthening SDG data systems and national statistical capacity
- Leveraging innovative finance by the banking sector for financing sustainable development and realizing the SDGs
- Advancing climate actions for sustainable development and inclusive economic development
These commitments exemplify Bahrain's dedication to making tangible progress and contributing to the global efforts in realizing the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda. By actively engaging in the summit and delivering these commitments, Bahrain reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development and its role in advancing the SDGs on a national and international level.
Bahrain demonstrates its unwavering commitment to the United Nations Agenda 2030, both within its domestic policies and on the international stage. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) form the foundation of Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030, which outlines the nation's long-term strategic objectives. These goals are further integrated into the Government Plans as part of their implementation.
Bahrain has made significant efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2023. It has been progressing steadily towards the SDGs, since the inception of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2000 and has effectively met all of its MDG targets.
