Bahrain Island: The Enchanting Heart of the Arabian Gulf
In the heart of the Arabian Gulf, the Kingdom of Bahrain is a captivating archipelago of 33 islands. Bahrain Island covers 80% of the entire 770 square kilometers. The majority of Bahrain Island is characterized by rocky limestone terrain adorned with dry sand dunes. The country’s natural resources include oil, natural gas, and fishing, with oil being a pivotal discovery in 1932.
The Kingdom‘s industrial vision focuses on achieving a sustainable, balanced and integrated industrial development and a clear vision of the free economy and, with the full participation of the private sector, provide quality job opportunities and indigenize advanced industrial technology.
The Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain launched the Industrial Sector Strategy (2022-2026) as part of the economic recovery plan. The strategy has three strategic objectives which are increasing the industrial sector’s contribution to the overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP), increasing the industrial sector’s national origin exports, and creating quality job opportunities for citizens in the industrial sector.
Refinery operations commenced in 1936, and as of the close of 2012, proven oil reserves stood at 120 million barrels, constituting 0.02% of Arab oil reserves and 0.01% of global reserves. Additionally, natural gas reserves were estimated at 92 billion cubic meters, comprising 0.17% of Arab reserves and 0.05% of global reserves.
Bahrain is actively expanding its energy exploration efforts and bolstering the production of oil, gas, and petrochemicals through various entities, prominently Bapco Refining, which was established in 1929.
In 1968, attracted by the availability of natural gas, foreign investors selected Bahrain as the site to build a smelter for aluminum production. Consequently, the Aluminum Bahrain Company (Alba) was founded in August 1968, establishing the Bahrain Aluminum Factory as one of the world's largest smelters.
