Measuring the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators
Spatial geographic information and geographic information technology are integral and fundamental components used to measure indicators related to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals were adopted by the UN as part of a global agenda for sustainable development which continues until 2030. Bahrain attaches great importance to these goals because of their direct impact on the development of sustainable economies, environmental sustainability, and prosperity.
Spatial geographic information, geographic information technology, and statistical information have been used to calculate a variety of sustainable development indicators. Among others, these include Indicator 11.2.1, which measures the proportion of the population with access to convenient public transportation services; indicator 11.3.1, which calculates the land-use density in relation to population growth; and Indicator 11.7.1, which measures the average area of open space in cities available for public use.
